Q: What is the Cockrill Learning Commons?
A: We are the learning commons/library of Cockrill Middle School in McKinney, Texas.  Please visit this post to learn more about who/what we are.

Q: Where is the CMS Learning Commons located?
A: Cockrill Middle School is located at 1351 Hardin Boulevard in McKinney, TX. Please call the learning commons if you need directions: 469-302-7938

Q: Can I follow the CMS Learning Commons on social media?
A: Yes!  Our student library assistants tweet, as does Mrs. Scott (MRS).  You can follow our students at @CowboyLibrary and Mrs. Scott at @MrsScott_1.  You can also follow our hashtags.  The learning commons hashtag is #CMSreads.  Our school hashtags, which we also use in the learning commons, are #CMSCowboys and #CMSliveskind.

Q: What are the learning commons' hours?
A: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday: 8:15 am – 4:15 pm. Wednesdays are staff meeting days, so we will have shortened hours: 8:15 am - 3:45 pm.  There may be special events other days that cause the learning commons' hours to change.  Please always check the homepage to see if there are any changes.

Q: How many books can I/my student check out at a time?
A: Students can check out up to three physical books at one time. Students also have access to our digital library (OverDrive) and can check out up to three e-books at a time. To learn more about OverDrive, click on the Ebooks tab on the menu of this website.

Q: When are my books due?
A: Checkouts are for three weeks at a time. We ask that you please return your books in a timely manner, as there are often waitlists for many of our books. Digital books are also checked out for three weeks at a time, but will be automatically returned through the OverDrive system.

Q: What is the philosophy of the learning commons?
A: The goal of the CMS Learning Commons is to give the school community the full information experience: using it, creating it, understanding it, and enjoying it. We are dedicated to fulfilling the missions of Cockrill Middle School and McKinney ISD, and we will continue to innovate and transform with the changing needs of our community.  We also believe in the pursuit of happiness that reading and inquiry bring, that sometimes you have to change your own story, and that imagination fuels the future.

Q: How do I pay for a lost or damaged book?
A: We only accept payment for lost or damaged books by check or cash. Please contact Mrs. Scott or Mrs. Chlebos for questions about lost or overdue books.

Q: What programs can I attend at the learning commons?
A: Check the Home Page for the most updated information about the learning commons.

Q: Does the CMS learning commons accept donations?
A: Absolutely!  We may not be able to put the book on the shelf for check-out (sometimes we can, just depends if each book meets the MISD selection policy), but we can use the books in our school programming or donate them to a local charity.

Q: Who are the learning commons staff?

A: Lauren Scott is your CMS Media Resource Specialist (librarian).
Mrs. Scott has been a teacher and librarian in McKinney ISD since 2007.  In fact, she’s proud to say her entire career has been in McKinney ISD!  She taught at the elementary level for nine years, and this is her third year as a media resource specialist.  Cockrill Middle School is her third campus in McKinney ISD.  Her previous campuses were Wilmeth Elementary and McKinney North High School.  She is excited to revamp the learning commons, see all of her past students and new students, and work with our wonderful CMS teachers to create a culture of creativity, exploration, and learning!

Mrs. Chlebos is the CMS learning commons assistant.  She has been at CMS since January of 2016.
